RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "They were among a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
