The speculation around The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team could be building a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
