Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
