As any major honors show nears, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
- Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
